There's a file in modules/sandbox/moduledata called companions and it has all of their names and various skill attributes laid out. This list is for those are under the profession of "wanderer" which are generated characters that you can hire on as companions. "Companions" are not in the game at all yet. If it was just a list of the best 3-4 companions of each type would that be helpful? The encyclopedia can be found in game at: Encyclopedia (N) -> Heroes -> Occupation Wanderer -> List of all companions with skillsĮDIT 2 - Thoughts on turning this into a "best companions of each type" list? With all the new companions doing a comprehensive list seems like it would get out of control. I don't think new companions spawn mid game, so if you are starting a new game and consider one particular companion type to be very important I'd make sure there are good ones of that type in the encyclopedia straight away and reroll if there aren't. 
Including some that have tactics (lucky, outcast, the golden) and blacksmithing (the smith), steward+trade (the swift, spicevendor), engineering (the engineer), and at least one VERY elite warrior (the swordsman, who has ~270ish in combat stats)
Check the encyclopedia of a new game and you will see options like Leopoardess, the shark, of the hills, etc. IMPORTANT - 1.07 edit - they fixed a bug that was preventing non-Sturgian companions from spawning, so there are a LOT of new options. A character's surname seems to indicate what they are good at.
